Stand Up | 'Striking Classes', Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:00pm, Wednesdays & Fridays 12pm Noon
Dark Horse striking classes focus on a combination of multiple different styles including boxing, kickboxing and Muay Thai. In these classes you’ll learn proper footwork, both offensive and defensive maneuvers. With punches, kicks, elbows, and knees, this is the perfect introduction to martial arts. Our classes are inclusive and welcoming to all, regardless of your age or experience level. Whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned pro, our instructors will help you improve your skills and achieve your goals. During each class, you can expect a warm-up consisting of jogging and body weight exercises, followed by partner drills and pad work.
Jiu Jitsu | 'All Levels Class' Mondays & Wednesdays 7:00pm, Tuesdays & Thursdays 11am
Our All Levels class is great for students of all levels! However, these are definitely the best classes for beginners specifically. If you are just starting out, these are the classes for you to attend. The techniques shown during class are for both Gi and Nogi. After the technique is taught, we go straight into live rolling (sparring). Rolling allows the student to practice the techniques while also learning to deal with pressure and thrive in it while in a safe environment. These classes are designed so that anyone new to Jiu Jitsu can learn the basic movements of the art while also providing more advanced movements for students that are looking for more of a challenge.
Jiu Jitsu | 'Situational Grappling', Tuesdays 7:30pm
{Class is by invite only, please talk with an instructor before attending}.
This class is for those looking to push themselves. There is no technique taught in this class, but rather a set of drills which challenge the students to improve their stamina, cardio, guard passing and take downs. This class is fast paced and fun! If you're looking to challenge yourself or compete in tournaments, this is the class for you. Please bring both gi and nogi uniforms when attending.
Jiu Jitsu | 'Fundamentals' Thursdays 7:30pm
This class is open to any white belts who are wanting to learn our blue belt curriculum. Students are required to wear a gi to this class. At Dark Horse Martial Arts, we do test our students for their blue belt. This 'demo' consists of a variety of movements, mostly escapes, which students will need to demonstrate effectively in a precise manner before sparring with several advanced members. This demo is a wonderful event which brings the entire club together — it's an incredible display of endurance and community! This class has no specific structure, but rather students are encouraged to go over the cirruculm in pairs, learning and repping at their own pace. We highly recommend having a regular partner for this class if possible! Coloured belts are present to be of assistance.
Jiu Jitsu | 'Advanced Class', Thursdays 7:30pm
Along with our All Levels classes we do run an Advanced Class that is invite-only for coloured belts on Thursday evenings at 7:30pm. This class is for students that have shown a thorough understanding of our basic techniques which make up the foundation of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Advanced class has some requirements that need to be met before attending, please speak with our instructor to find out more.
Jiu Jitsu | 'Open Mat', Saturdays 12:00pm Noon
Every Saturday after Women's Only Class we have an Open Mat which is by donation to the local SPCA. This event is a very social and casual time on the mats where members are welcome to drop by and get some rolls in, rep techniques or even just hang out and chat! More often than not, we like to go for a cheeky beer afterwards at our favourite neighbours, Sheepdog Brewery which is conveniently located right next door!
Jiu Jitsu | 'Women's Only', Saturdays 11am Currently PAUSED
These classes emphasize the importance of using technique and precision to be able to overcome larger and more powerful opponents. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was crafted with the idea that a smaller person would be able to beat a larger person. With this in mind the classes are structured so that you will be comfortable defending yourself from any position.
At Dark Horse Martial Arts we always strive to maintain a safe environment in which to train. This is achieved through a club atmosphere in which we teach that the most important person in the club is your partner, because without them you would not be able to train. Safety is a huge emphasis for us at DHMA. We believe in leaving your ego at the door and training with a focus on control, not strength.
We are now located in the Moose Meadows building right beside Cam Clark Ford, and use the same entrance as Rock Cycle
