Frequently Asked Questions

What do you offer?

Brazilian jiu-jitsu is our specialty, with over 7 classes a week offered! In addition to Jiu Jitsu, we also teach beginner-friendly striking/Muay Thai classes and host a Women's Self Defence class every Saturday at 11am.

What is Jiu Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is primarily a grappling martial art. You'll learn take-downs, throws, and ground grappling, as well as control positions, escaping, and submissions such as arm locks and blood chokes.

Do you offer beginner classes?

Every Monday and Wednesday we offer Jiu Jitsu classes which are beginner friendly. You can come and jump right into class. The DHMA instructors and members are always willing to help new members. Our Striking classes can also be adapted to help new students with no experience! Simply let our instructors know it's your first time.

Is this club LGBTQA+ safe?

Absolutely. Everyone is welcome on our mats and we make it a priority to ensure our club is a safe place for all students. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to one of the coaches before class.

Are there Jiu Jitsu competitions?

Our club actively participates in local competitions. There are a variety of competitions across Alberta and BC with varying rule sets that allow BJJ practitioners a fun and safe environment to engage in a competitive competition, we encourage our students to compete as we find it's the fastest way to learn!

As of 2022, we are now the proud hosts of the Dark Horse Grappling Series in Banff. We host these tournaments several times a year and boast over 400 competitors. For more information about competing or volunteering, visit: https://darkhorsegrapplingseries.com/home

Is it Gi or Nogi?

The fundamental classes are taught in a manner that is both Gi and Nogi friendly.

It's my first class, what do I wear?

For tops, we recommend a long sleeved fitted shirt — definitely not made of a thermal material! You will get very hot. For bottoms, fitted shorts or leggings for women work fine. We recommend avoiding cotton as it will become very wet and will stretch out. We sell rash-guards (shirts) and spats (leggings specifically for Jiu Jitsu) as well as gi uniforms at the club, although unnecessary if you're just starting and wanting to see if it's for you.

For striking, you do need your own wraps and gloves. You can bring your own, or purchase a set at the club.

Do I have to have a Gi? And why do we wear them?

No! We support and encourage both Gi and Nogi training. We also have a great selection of club Gi's, rash-guards, fight shorts, and spats available for purchase; although, you are more than welcome to train in your own gear.

The main reason we practise Jiu Jitsu in either a Gi or rash-guard is for hygiene. Contrary to popular belief, it's not just for looks! Both the Gi and rash-guard help prevent an array of nasty skin infections that can occur with skin on skin interaction. It also keeps your sweat off of your opponent. In addition, the Gi does mimic regular clothing, so it's a great way to train self defense for the real world!

We don't recommend participating if:

- You're feeling under the weather and may be contagious

- Have received a new tattoo or piercing recently

- Have a skin infection

- Are still recovering from a severe injury
